Suspected terrorists launched a deadly overnight attack on Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State in the early hours of Sunday, April 20, leaving several people feared dead, including soldiers.

According to Punch, the assault began around 3:00 a.m. after residents reportedly received a threat letter from the attackers days earlier, which had already heightened tension in the community.

The gunmen stormed the area under the cover of darkness, firing sporadically and causing panic as residents fled their homes for safety.

Security forces, including Nigerian Army personnel and local vigilante groups, were quickly mobilised and engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that reportedly lasted until about 5:00 a.m.

A source from Kaiama TV said the joint response helped contain the situation, though not without losses.

The attackers were also alleged to have detonated an explosive device at a military camp in the area, causing significant damage before pushing further into the community.

Casualties were recorded among the security operatives during the exchange, with reports confirming that some soldiers lost their lives, although the full extent of the damage is yet to be confirmed.

The assailants reportedly also made away with military patrol vehicles and motorcycles before retreating from the scene.
