Israeli President Visits Australia After Bondi Beach Attack

News

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has arrived in Australia on an official visit to honour the victims of the deadly Bondi Beach attack and express solidarity with the country’s Jewish community.

Herzog’s visit follows a recent antisemitic shooting at a Jewish gathering near Bondi Beach, which left several people dead and shocked the nation. During his stay, the Israeli leader is expected to meet with Australian government officials, Jewish community leaders, survivors of the attack, and families of the victims.

In a statement, Herzog described the visit as a gesture of unity and shared grief, condemning antisemitism and all forms of hate-driven violence. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and senior officials have also reiterated their commitment to combating extremism and protecting religious communities.

The visit, however, has drawn protests from pro-Palestinian groups and critics of Israel’s actions in Gaza, prompting heightened security measures in Sydney and other cities on Herzog’s itinerary.

Authorities say the increased security is to ensure public safety while allowing lawful protests to take place. Despite the tensions, officials have stressed that the visit is centred on mourning the victims of the Bondi Beach attack and reinforcing Australia’s stance against antisemitism.
