The village head of Woro community in Kwara State, Umar Salihu, has revealed that terrorists carried out a deadly assault on the village for nearly 10 hours before security operatives eventually arrived.
Salihu said the attackers stormed Woro in the late hours and unleashed hours of sustained violence, killing scores of residents and setting homes and properties ablaze. According to him, the assailants operated freely throughout the night, moving from house to house while villagers fled into nearby bushes to escape.
He lamented that despite repeated distress calls and pleas for help, military intervention only came long after the attackers had completed their operation and withdrawn. By the time soldiers arrived, Salihu said, many lives had already been lost and large sections of the community had been reduced to ruins.
“The attack lasted for about 10 hours. We kept calling for help, but no security personnel showed up until everything was over. They came when the damage had already been done,” the village head said.
Survivors described the incident as one of the worst attacks the area has witnessed, noting that families were displaced and livelihoods destroyed. Many residents are now seeking refuge in neighboring communities, fearful of possible further attacks.
The incident has sparked outrage and renewed concerns over the worsening security situation in parts of Kwara State, with residents calling on the government and security agencies to strengthen protection for rural communities and ensure faster response to distress calls.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release an official casualty figure, while investigations into the attack are ongoing.
