The boxing world is mourning the death of Puerto Rican boxer Prichard Colón, who has passed away at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after suffering a devastating brain injury during a 2015 bout.
Colón was once regarded as one of Puerto Rico’s brightest boxing prospects. He entered his fight against Terrel Williams on October 17, 2015, with an unbeaten record of 16 wins, including 13 victories by knockout.
During the bout in Virginia, Colón was repeatedly struck with punches to the back of the head. He went down twice in the ninth round before his team stopped the fight. Hours later, he underwent emergency surgery after doctors discovered bleeding in his brain.
Colón remained in a coma for 221 days. When he eventually regained consciousness, he was unable to walk or speak and required constant care from his family.
For the following decade, his parents dedicated themselves to caring for him at home. His injury also sparked renewed discussions about fighter safety and illegal punches in boxing. In 2016, the World Boxing Council introduced what became known as the “Prichard Colón Rule” to strengthen punishment for rabbit punches.
In 2017, Colón’s parents also filed a $50 million lawsuit against the event doctor and promoters over the circumstances surrounding his injury.
Confirming his son’s death, Prichard’s father, Richard Colón, wrote on Facebook that his son had “left this earthly world” and was now “in a better place.” He also revealed that the family had tried to fulfil Prichard’s wish of returning to Puerto Rico and expressed gratitude to everyone who supported and prayed for him over the years.
Prichard Colón’s promising boxing career was tragically cut short, but his courage and the strength of his family throughout his long battle will remain part of his legacy.
