A former operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has dismissed the long-standing claim that former Nigerian Head of State, General Sani Abacha, died after eating poisoned apples.

Speaking during a recent interview, Amachree said Abacha died from a cardiac arrest while having intercourse, insisting there was no evidence to support the widely circulated poisoning narrative.

According to him, many conspiracy theories emerged after Abacha’s sudden death on June 8, 1998, but the official account remained that the former military ruler suffered a fatal heart attack.

Amachree maintained that the “poisoned apple” story was false and urged Nigerians to rely on verified facts rather than rumours surrounding Abacha’s death.

His remarks have reignited public debate on one of Nigeria’s most controversial political figures, with many Nigerians sharing differing opinions on the circumstances surrounding the late military leader’s death.
