The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested a Nigerian national, Ayodeji Olamide Ajayi, who was convicted of multiple criminal offences in the United States and is now facing deportation to Nigeria.
ICE announced the arrest in a statement shared on its official X account on Monday, June 22, 2026, confirming that Ajayi would be removed from the country in the coming days.
According to the agency, Ajayi has a criminal history that includes convictions and charges related to rape, kidnapping, domestic violence, criminal trespassing, intimidation, and obstruction.
Reports indicate that in 2024, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) Criminal Warrants Unit in Tennessee launched a manhunt for Ajayi after he became wanted in connection with an aggravated rape case.
Authorities eventually tracked him down in Bradley County. During efforts to secure his arrest, detectives contacted Ajayi by phone and urged him to surrender. However, he reportedly refused, claiming he was armed and intended to provoke law enforcement into using deadly force against him.
Following a prolonged standoff, investigators maintained communication with the suspect and successfully persuaded him to surrender peacefully. After his arrest, officers discovered that the weapon he claimed to possess was a toy BB pistol rather than a real firearm.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that Ajayi was wanted on several active felony warrants, including four counts of aggravated rape, one count of rape, aggravated burglary, sexual battery, aggravated kidnapping, and domestic assault.
ICE further revealed that Ajayi had remained in the United States illegally after entering the country on a student visa in 2007 and failing to maintain his legal immigration status.
With his arrest now completed, U.S. immigration authorities say deportation proceedings are underway, paving the way for his return to Nigeria.
