A Jigawa State High Court has sentenced a man, Abubakar Muhd, to death by hanging for raping a 15-year-old girl.
The court found Muhd guilty after the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, establishing that he forcefully had sexual intercourse with the minor, an offence punishable under the law.
In delivering judgment, the trial judge described the crime as “heinous and condemnable,” stressing that rape, especially of a minor, is a grave violation of human dignity and must be met with the full weight of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
The court sentenced the convict to death by hanging and further ordered him to pay the sum of ₦5 million as compensation to the victim for the trauma and harm she suffered.
The judge noted that the compensation was meant to support the victim’s recovery and reaffirm society’s commitment to protecting children and vulnerable persons.

Muhd’s plea for leniency was rejected, with the court maintaining that the severity of the offence left no room for mercy.
The ruling has been welcomed by rights advocates, who say it sends a strong message against sexual violence in the state.
