Nigeria’s Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, resigned on Monday night, citing health concerns—a move that has cleared the path for former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to assume the position, according to top government sources who spoke with SaharaReporters.
General Musa reportedly met with President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Monday evening—his first public interaction with the president since his retirement on October 24, 2025. During the meeting, sources said President Tinubu informed him that he would be appointed as Badaru’s successor.
In a resignation letter dated December 1, Badaru, 63, expressed gratitude to the president for the opportunity to serve. Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga later confirmed that Tinubu had accepted the resignation, adding: “President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.”
Badaru, who served as governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023, was appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His exit comes at a critical moment, coinciding with President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency, with further details expected in the coming days.
