Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered a criminal syndicate that allegedly hides illicit drugs inside the luggage of unsuspecting passengers travelling on commercial buses.
According to a statement by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the operation was carried out jointly by officers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and Anambra State.
The investigation began on Saturday, June 20, 2026, when NDLEA officers intercepted a Sienna bus travelling from Nnewi, Anambra State, at Abaji in the FCT. During a search of the vehicle, they recovered a waybill package containing 467.7 grams of suspected methamphetamine concealed inside a black nylon bag, which had been placed inside a sack of clothes bearing the receiver’s phone number.
A follow-up operation led to the arrest of the intended recipient, Mrs. Gloria Peter, at Utako Motor Park in Abuja. However, she denied any knowledge or ownership of the suspicious package found in her luggage.
Her denial prompted investigators to trace the package back to the loading point in Nnewi, where one of the bus loaders confessed that he had secretly placed the drug package inside the woman’s bag on the instruction of the bus driver, identified as Abdurrazak Isah.
Following his arrest, the driver reportedly admitted that the drugs belonged to one of the passengers, Onyebuchi Victor Okoye. Acting on the information, NDLEA operatives conducted another follow-up operation and arrested Okoye at Utako Motor Park in Abuja.
The agency said investigations are ongoing to dismantle the drug trafficking network and bring all those involved to justice.
