The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly staging a fake kidnapping in a bid to extort ₦4 million from their family members.

According to the police, the suspects conspired to fake the abduction of one of them and demanded a ransom from relatives, hoping to deceive the family into paying for his release.

The plot reportedly began when one of the suspects went into hiding while the other contacted family members, claiming that armed kidnappers had abducted him. The callers allegedly demanded ₦4 million as ransom and warned the family against involving security agencies.

Suspicious of the circumstances, the family alerted the police. Detectives immediately launched an investigation, using intelligence and technical tracking to trace the phone numbers linked to the ransom demands.

The operation eventually led officers to the suspects’ hideout, where the supposed kidnapping victim was found safe and unharmed. Police confirmed that the entire abduction had been staged to fraudulently obtain money from the family.

Both suspects have been taken into custody and are assisting with investigations. The Edo State Police Command warned members of the public against engaging in self-kidnapping or any form of criminal deception, stressing that anyone found guilty would face the full weight of the law.

The command also urged residents to promptly report suspicious incidents and continue cooperating with law enforcement to combat crime across the state.
