KAMPALA, Uganda — Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine (Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu) has fled the country after weeks in hiding following the disputed January 15 presidential election. Wine cited threats to his safety and a rigged election victory by President Yoweri Museveni as reasons for his departure.
In video messages shared on social media, Wine confirmed he had left Uganda for “critical engagements” and announced that his deputy would now lead the National Unity Platform (NUP) in his absence.
Wine, 44, went into hiding after his home was raided by security forces amid what opposition supporters describe as a targeted manhunt. Footage showed him with a beard, emphasizing the danger posed by the military’s intensified search.
The singer‑turned‑politician, who has captured significant youth support, has long challenged Museveni’s decades-long rule. The January election results, giving Museveni over 70% of the vote, were widely contested, with allegations of voter intimidation, arrests of opposition supporters, and restrictions on independent media — claims the government denies.
Despite leaving Uganda, Wine vowed to continue his political struggle and assured supporters that party activities would continue under the leadership of his deputy. His departure underscores rising tensions in Uganda’s political landscape and raises concerns about the space for opposition in the country.
