Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has demanded a public apology and N5 billion in damages from actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over alleged defamatory statements made during a television interview.
According to a letter issued by Obi’s legal team, the former Anambra State governor accused Okonkwo of making false and damaging remarks capable of tarnishing his reputation and lowering his standing in the eyes of the public.
The lawyers argued that the statements, which were widely circulated across traditional and social media platforms, portrayed Obi in a negative light and caused significant reputational harm.
Obi’s legal representatives demanded that Okonkwo immediately retract the alleged defamatory statements and publish an unreserved apology in at least two national newspapers and across his social media platforms.
In addition to the apology, the legal team is seeking N5 billion as compensation for the alleged damage caused by the remarks.
The letter reportedly warned that failure to comply with the demands within the stipulated period would leave Obi with no option but to pursue legal action to protect his reputation and seek redress through the courts.
The dispute marks the latest public fallout involving prominent figures within Nigeria’s political space, drawing widespread attention and reactions from supporters of both men.
As of the time of filing this report, Kenneth Okonkwo had not publicly responded to the demands made by Peter Obi’s legal team.
