In a statement, the NLC said the rising cost of living has pushed millions of workers and ordinary citizens into extreme hardship, making it increasingly difficult for families to afford basic necessities such as food, housing, transportation and healthcare. The labour union noted that inflation continues to erode workers’ incomes, leaving salaries worthless and unable to meet daily needs.
The Congress also highlighted worsening insecurity across the country, saying persistent attacks, kidnappings and violence have disrupted livelihoods, forced many out of their homes and crippled economic activities, especially in rural communities.
According to the NLC, wages remain grossly inadequate despite the harsh economic realities, with many workers earning far below what is required to survive. It added that existing social protection programmes have either failed or collapsed, offering little or no relief to the most vulnerable Nigerians.
The labour body called on the federal government to urgently address the crisis by stabilising the economy, improving security, reviewing workers’ wages, strengthening social safety nets and implementing people-centred policies that prioritise the welfare of Nigerians.
The NLC warned that failure to take decisive action could further deepen poverty, hunger and social unrest across the country.
