The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) has alleged that a Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, was shot dead at his residence in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Bishop Fakunle, 58, was said to be from Iye in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State. According to reports, the tragic incident occurred on September 4 at his home in Kensington, Johannesburg.
Speaking on the development, NICASA National President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, revealed that the circumstances surrounding the bishop’s death have left his family, friends, and members of the Nigerian community in shock and mourning.
Onyekwelu alleged that two suspects gained access to the cleric’s residence and opened fire on him, reportedly shooting him multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Describing the incident as a “horrific and senseless act of violence,” he condemned the killing and expressed concern over the continued loss of Nigerian lives to violent crime in South Africa.
“This was not merely an ordinary loss of life; it was a horrific and senseless act of violence that has robbed a family of a loved one and the Nigerian community of another precious life,” he said.
NICASA confirmed that the matter has been reported to the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, while a murder case has reportedly been opened at the Jeppe Police Station.
The association has called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and other relevant authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the bishop’s death and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
