The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Udeme Emmanuel Ekpeme for allegedly posing as a medical doctor and defrauding a woman of ₦500,000 with a fake promise of securing hospital employment.
According to the police, the suspect collected the money after assuring the victim that he could help her obtain a job at a government hospital. However, after receiving the payment, he allegedly failed to provide the promised employment and became difficult to reach.
Following a complaint from the victim, police detectives launched an investigation, leading to Ekpeme’s arrest. Preliminary findings reportedly revealed that the suspect was not a licensed medical doctor and had been falsely presenting himself as one.
The police said investigations are ongoing to determine whether more victims were defrauded using the same scheme. Authorities also urged members of the public to verify job offers through the appropriate government agencies and avoid making payments to individuals claiming they can secure employment.
The suspect is expected to be charged to court after the conclusion of the investigation.
