The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly criticized the latest increase in petrol prices by Dangote Refinery, describing the new pump price of N1,265 per litre as unacceptable and avoidable at a time when Nigerians are already grappling with severe economic hardship.
In a statement reacting to the development, the labour union expressed concern over the continuous rise in fuel costs and its impact on workers, businesses, and ordinary citizens. The NLC argued that the latest hike would further worsen inflation, increase transportation costs, and place additional pressure on household incomes.
The union also called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to ensure that Dangote Refinery receives sufficient supplies of locally produced crude oil. According to the NLC, increasing the refinery’s access to Nigerian crude could help lower production costs and reduce the burden of rising petrol prices on consumers.
The labour body maintained that with adequate domestic crude supply, there should be greater stability in fuel pricing, especially as the country seeks to reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
The NLC further urged relevant authorities to prioritize policies that protect Nigerians from the harsh effects of fuel price increases, stressing that citizens should not continue to bear the consequences of challenges within the petroleum supply chain.
The latest petrol price adjustment has sparked widespread reactions across the country, with many Nigerians expressing concerns about its potential impact on the cost of living and economic activities.
