Three siblings travelling from Abuja to Benue State to bury their late mother were reportedly abducted by suspected gunmen in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, July 18, along the Ogobia–Otukpo Road, between Omutele and Ankpechi villages in Oglewu District. The victims were said to be transporting their mother’s remains to Iklenyi community in Okpokwu Local Government Area for burial when they were attacked.
According to reports, the family’s vehicle developed a mechanical fault during the journey, leaving them stranded for several hours. After the vehicle was repaired and they resumed their trip at about 2:00 a.m., they reportedly ran into armed men who abducted them.
Residents said they heard gunshots between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m., causing panic as many fled the area for safety.
The Chairman of Ohimini Local Government Area, Gabriel Adole, confirmed the incident, stating that he was heading to the scene to assess the situation and gather more information.
As of the time of filing this report, the Benue State Police Command had not officially confirmed the abduction. Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, for comments were unsuccessful, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
