A 64-year-old Nigerian father of five, John Adesoye, has achieved his dream of becoming a registered nurse in the United Kingdom, proving that age is no barrier to education and career success.
Adesoye, who grew up in Nigeria, previously worked as an electronics technician in Greece before relocating to the UK in 2013. Determined to make a difference in people’s lives, he changed careers and joined Southmead Hospital in Bristol as a healthcare assistant in 2014.
After years of dedication and hard work, he recently graduated as a nurse through a degree apprenticeship at the University of the West of England and has now secured a nursing position at Southmead Hospital.
Speaking about his achievement, Adesoye encouraged others not to give up on their dreams, saying, “If I can do it, others can too. People are more brilliant and stronger than they think. It’s never too late.”
He explained that his passion for caring for people inspired his move into healthcare. During his training, he gained experience in several hospital departments, including cardiology, accident and emergency, and intensive care.
Despite completing his nursing degree at 64, Adesoye says he hopes to pursue a master’s degree in the future if given the opportunity. He believes education opens new doors and encourages lifelong learning.
His tutors praised his commitment, noting the challenges of balancing studies, work, and family responsibilities. Bristol NHS Foundation Trust also celebrated his achievement, describing the entire team as incredibly proud of his success.
Adesoye’s inspiring journey serves as a reminder that determination, hard work, and perseverance can make it possible to achieve lifelong dreams at any age.
