The Federal Government has announced plans to review Nigeria’s basic education structure by scrapping the long-standing separation between Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) as part of efforts to tackle the country’s growing out-of-school crisis.
The proposed reform comes amid concerns that more than 20 million Nigerian children are currently out of school, making Nigeria one of the countries with the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.
Education authorities believe that merging JSS and SSS into a more seamless secondary education system could reduce dropout rates, improve students’ transition from junior to senior classes, and strengthen learning outcomes across the country.
According to the government, many students fail to continue their education after completing Junior Secondary School due to financial challenges, poor access to schools, and the transition process between the two levels. The planned policy aims to eliminate these barriers by creating a continuous learning pathway for students.
The reform is also expected to align Nigeria’s education system with global best practices while ensuring that more children complete their secondary education.
Education stakeholders have welcomed discussions around the proposal but stressed that the success of the policy will depend on adequate funding, improved school infrastructure, recruitment of qualified teachers, and effective implementation.
The Federal Government said consultations with relevant stakeholders will continue before a final decision is made on the proposed changes to the education system.
