An Akwa Ibom State High Court has sentenced a mother of four to life imprisonment for the attempted murder of a 12-year-old girl in a case that sparked public outrage.

The convict was found guilty of attempting to take the life of the minor after luring her to a secluded location and inflicting severe injuries on her. According to prosecutors, the victim was left for dead but was later discovered and rushed to a medical facility, where she received treatment and survived the attack.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence and witness testimonies linking the defendant to the crime. The court heard that the attack was premeditated and carried out with the intention of causing the victim’s death.

Delivering judgment, the presiding judge held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The court described the offence as cruel, inhumane, and deserving of severe punishment.

The judge subsequently sentenced the woman to life imprisonment, noting that the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others and reinforce the protection of children against violence and abuse.

The victim, who survived the attack, is said to be recovering, while child rights advocates have welcomed the judgment, describing it as a victory for justice and the protection of vulnerable children.

Authorities urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report cases of child abuse, violence, and exploitation to relevant agencies for prompt action.
