Sani Jimoh has revealed that military operatives admitted the killing of his son, Abdulsamad Jamiu, was a mistake following a tragic incident involving troops of the Nigerian Army Guards Brigade in Dei-Dei, Abuja.
Jamiu, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was fatally shot on April 25 at their residence in Shagari Estate. The Nigerian Army had earlier stated that the shooting occurred during an operation responding to a distress call about armed robbers in the area.
According to the military, troops came under gunfire from fleeing suspects, leading to a brief but intense exchange. However, the family has strongly disputed this account, insisting that there is no evidence to support claims of a shootout.
Speaking after the incident, Jimoh explained that he was in Kogi State attending his mother’s funeral when he received a distress call around 2 a.m. He said soldiers later narrated their version of events to him.
“They said they were chasing a thief but couldn’t see him. Then they noticed the barbed wire at the back of my compound had been tampered with and assumed the suspect had entered,” he recounted.
Jimoh said he questioned how the soldiers gained access into the house. According to him, they claimed the door appeared to be unlocked. He further explained that the soldiers told him they tried to force open his son’s room door, believing someone inside was preventing them from entering.
“They said someone was inside trying to block the door, and in the process, what happened happened,” Jimoh said.
Dissatisfied with the explanation, Jimoh questioned how such a situation escalated into a fatal shooting inside a private room. He added that the soldiers responded by asking him to remain calm, admitting that the incident was a mistake.
The family continues to demand accountability, maintaining that physical evidence contradicts the military’s initial claim of an exchange of gunfire.
