Seven Nigerian journalists have lost their lives in a tragic road accident along the Gombe–Yola highway, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The fatal crash occurred on Tuesday when the vehicle conveying the journalists was involved in a collision while travelling from Gombe State to Yola, Adamawa State. The journalists were reportedly returning from an official assignment when the incident happened.
Eyewitnesses said the vehicle veered off the road after a collision with another vehicle, resulting in a devastating impact that claimed multiple lives on the spot. Emergency responders and security operatives were quickly mobilised to the scene, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Although the identities of all the victims have not yet been officially released, it was confirmed that the deceased were practicing journalists attached to different media organisations in the North-East. Authorities said efforts are ongoing to notify their families and employers.
Reacting to the incident, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) expressed deep shock and sorrow over the loss, describing it as a dark day for the Nigerian media industry. The union called for improved road safety measures and better protection for journalists who frequently travel under risky conditions in the course of their duties.
Security agencies have since launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash, while traffic along the Gombe–Yola road was temporarily disrupted.
