The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly carried out targeted airstrikes against suspected coup plotters from the Benin Republic who were attempting to escape toward Nigeria’s border regions.
According to military sources, the operation was executed after intelligence reports revealed that some members of the failed coup attempt in Cotonou were fleeing through the northern corridor in an effort to evade arrest by Beninese authorities.
NAF aircraft were deployed for surveillance and later engaged the suspects in what officials described as “precise and coordinated strikes,” aimed at preventing instability from spilling into Nigerian territory. Security operatives have since heightened monitoring along the border to block any further infiltration.
Regional security analysts say the action underscores Nigeria’s commitment to supporting constitutional order in neighboring countries and preventing armed groups from using its borders as safe havens.
Benin Republic’s government recently announced the arrest of several soldiers linked to the attempted coup, with more suspects still being tracked.
Nigerian authorities have not released an official public statement yet, but sources indicate that joint security operations in the area will continue.
