‘Fubara Defected to APC for Himself, Not Rivers People’ — Reuben Abati

News

Journalist and political analyst Reuben Abati has taken aim at Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara over his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting the governor’s move was motivated by personal gains rather than the welfare of the state.

Speaking during a political commentary, Abati said Fubara’s decision had nothing to do with the collective interest of Rivers people. Instead, he described the defection as a strategic step by the governor to secure his political future amid the ongoing power tussle in the state.

Abati argued that leaders are expected to uphold loyalty to their mandates and the people who elected them, not switch parties solely for convenience or personal advantage. He added that Fubara’s action raises questions about political integrity and the values expected of public office holders.

He stressed that while defections are common in Nigerian politics, they often leave citizens disadvantaged, as such moves typically disrupt governance and shift focus away from public service to political survival.

Abati concluded by urging political leaders to prioritize the people over personal ambition, noting that Rivers residents deserve leaders who place their welfare above party politics.
