A wave of outrage has erupted among retired military personnel following reports that the recently sacked Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, along with the former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, and Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, are set to receive substantial lifetime benefits.
The benefits, according to sources, include luxury housing, official vehicles, domestic staff, medical care, and other privileges typically reserved for retired heads of military formations.Many ex-servicemen have condemned the move, describing it as unfair and insensitive, especially given the harsh economic realities facing retired soldiers who continue to struggle to access their pensions and gratuities.Some retired officers, speaking under the aegis of the Coalition of Concerned Veterans, said the government’s decision reflects deep inequality within the armed forces.
They argued that while top officers enjoy lavish compensation, many rank-and-file retirees live in hardship after years of sacrifice for the country.“We find it unacceptable that a few individuals who spent only a short time in office will be rewarded with lifetime benefits, while thousands of veterans who gave their best years to the nation languish in poverty,” one retired officer lamented.
The controversy follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent shake-up of the military leadership, which saw the appointment of new service chiefs in a bid to rejuvenate Nigeria’s security architecture.As debate continues, calls are growing for the federal government to review the reward system within the armed forces to ensure fairness and equity among all personnel, both serving and retired.
