The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian citizens in South Africa, calling on the South African authorities to carry out an urgent, thorough, and transparent investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government identified the victims as Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe, popularly known as “Big Joe.”
According to the ministry, Iroegbu allegedly died after being subjected to a brutal interrogation by officers of the Tshwane Metro Police in Sunnyside, Pretoria, on June 28, 2026. On the same day, Musa Yunana Joe was reportedly shot dead by unidentified gunmen in front of his shop in Witbank, Mpumalanga.
The government also recalled the unresolved death of another Nigerian, Nnaemeka Mathew Andrew Ekpenyong, who was allegedly killed earlier this year. It noted that despite reports that the identities of the officers involved are known to the South African Police Service, no arrests have been made.
Expressing deep concern over the recurring attacks on Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, the Federal Government urged South African authorities to investigate the killings without delay and prosecute those responsible in accordance with the law.
The ministry further condemned inflammatory public remarks allegedly made by a South African government spokesperson regarding Nigerians, describing such statements as irresponsible and capable of inciting hatred and violence against members of the Nigerian community. It also criticized groups accused of promoting xenophobic attacks and called on the South African government to take decisive action against hate speech and violence targeting migrants.
While reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to justice and the rule of law, the government stressed that criminal allegations should be handled through legal processes and that every individual deserves a fair hearing.
The Federal Government extended its condolences to the families of the victims and assured them that diplomatic efforts would continue until justice is served. It also advised Nigerians living in South Africa to remain calm, stay vigilant, avoid areas prone to violence, and comply with local laws while authorities work to address the situation.
