The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that 14 people have lost their lives while 42 others remain unaccounted for following a tragic boat accident in Kogi State.The incident occurred on the River Niger in Ibaji Local Government Area, where a passenger boat reportedly capsized while conveying villagers across the river.
According to NEMAโs update on Thursday, 24 passengers were rescued alive from the water after frantic efforts by emergency responders and local divers. Fourteen bodies were later recovered, while search-and-rescue operations are still ongoing to locate 42 others feared to be missing.Though details about the exact cause of the mishap remain sketchy, eyewitnesses said the vessel was overcrowded and may have hit a submerged object, leading to the accident.NEMA said it was working closely with the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, marine police, and community volunteers to continue the rescue mission.
The agency further advised riverine communities to avoid night travels, use life jackets, and adhere to safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies.Boat accidents remain a recurring challenge in Kogi and other riverine parts of Nigeria, where many communities depend on waterways for transportation.
