A Magistrate Court in Ebute Metta has ordered the remand of a prominent Lagos State chieftain of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Samsideen Oladiti, widely known as Shamelon, over serious allegations of murder and physical assault.
According to information obtained by Lagos Reporters, Shamelon is accused of playing a direct role in the killing of Adeshina Rahman during a violent clash. In addition, a viral video allegedly showed him physically assaulting a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, sparking widespread outrage among residents and commuters.
During the court sitting, the presiding Magistrate directed that Shamelon be remanded in custody, pending the conclusion of investigations and the issuance of legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The matter has once again brought attention to the persistent issue of violence and lawlessness often linked to transport union operations in Lagos. Residents and business owners on Lagos Island have repeatedly complained about harassment, intimidation, and extortion at the hands of some union members.
Civil rights advocates, reacting to the development, urged the Lagos State Government and security agencies to treat the case as a test of their commitment to curbing the excesses of union leaders and restoring discipline within the transport sector.
