Ohanaeze President-General Urges FG to Free Nnamdi KanuThe President-General of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has appealed to the Federal Government to order the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Azuta-Mbata made the appeal while addressing journalists on Thursday, stressing that Kanu’s prolonged detention has continued to heighten tension and deepen grievances in the South-East region.He noted that releasing the IPOB leader would not only calm frayed nerves but also pave the way for meaningful dialogue and reconciliation between the Federal Government and aggrieved groups in the region.“The continued incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu is a matter of serious concern to Ndigbo and indeed all Nigerians who believe in justice and fairness. His release will help restore peace, foster unity, and reinforce the government’s commitment to equity and inclusiveness,” the Ohanaeze leader stated.
Azuta-Mbata further urged President Bola Tinubu to consider the political, security, and humanitarian implications of Kanu’s detention, adding that granting him freedom would demonstrate the administration’s willingness to heal old wounds and build bridges of national cohesion.He reiterated Ohanaeze’s readiness to partner with the Federal Government in promoting peace and development across the South-East, insisting that genuine reconciliation could only begin with the release of the detained IPOB leader.
