The Rivers State House of Assembly on Thursday reconvened for plenary, marking its first sitting since the end of the Emergency Rule declared in the state by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025.Lawmakers, who had been unable to meet during the six-month period of emergency administration, returned to the Assembly complex in Port Harcourt amid tight security. Their resumption followed Wednesday’s official handover of authority from the outgone Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd), to Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The plenary session was described as historic, as it signaled the restoration of democratic governance in the state after months of federal control. Members expressed optimism that the resumption of legislative activities would help fast-track development initiatives and address pending matters that had been put on hold during the emergency.
Speaker of the House pledged that the Assembly would work harmoniously with the executive to ensure stability and deliver good governance to the people of Rivers State.The sitting also included deliberations on priority bills and motions expected to guide the administration in its post-emergency phase.
