An escaped cybercrime suspect, identified as Asar Sesugh, has died following a violent confrontation involving operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and suspected armed associates in Makurdi, Benue State.

According to reports, Sesugh had previously escaped from EFCC custody while under investigation for alleged cybercrime-related offences. Efforts by the anti-graft agency to recapture him reportedly led operatives to a location where he was believed to be hiding.

During the operation, suspected cult members and associates of the fugitive allegedly opened fire on EFCC operatives in an attempt to prevent his arrest. The operatives reportedly returned fire, resulting in a gun battle.

Sesugh was said to have sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and was later rushed for medical treatment. However, he reportedly succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward.

The EFCC has yet to release a detailed official statement on the incident, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the attack on the operatives.

The incident has raised concerns over the growing links between cybercrime networks and armed criminal groups, as authorities intensify efforts to combat financial crimes and related security threats across the country.
