The Edo State Police Command has arrested a woman popularly known as an “Aza Woman” for allegedly spreading false information about the kidnapping of students of Green Park Academy in Benin City.
According to the police, the suspect circulated claims on social media alleging that several students of the school had been abducted by unknown gunmen. The report quickly gained attention online, sparking fear and panic among parents, guardians, and members of the public.
Following investigations, police authorities discovered that the kidnapping claim was entirely false and that no such incident had occurred at the school. Security operatives subsequently traced and arrested the woman responsible for originating and spreading the misinformation.
The Edo State Police Command condemned the act, describing it as irresponsible and capable of causing unnecessary panic, disrupting public peace, and undermining confidence in security agencies.
Police officials urged residents to verify information before sharing it on social media, warning that individuals found spreading false reports capable of inciting fear or disturbing public order would face legal consequences.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling misinformation and ensuring that those who deliberately spread false narratives are held accountable under the law.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing, and the suspect is expected to be charged in court upon completion of the inquiry.
