The traditional ruler of Owa-Onire in Kwara State, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi, has fled his palace and relocated to the outskirts of Ilorin due to ongoing insecurity in his community.

The monarch revealed that his decision came after a series of attacks by armed groups, including a violent raid on his palace on December 31, 2025. During the incident, eight attackers reportedly broke into the palace, seized phones belonging to him and his wife, and took money at gunpoint before abducting two palace aides.

Oba Fabiyi also recounted a previous kidnapping where he was held captive for seven days and only released after a ₦5 million ransom was paid by members of the community.

He stated that he will not return to the palace until security improves, highlighting the lack of a police station and poor security presence in the area. Despite his relocation, the monarch said he continues to carry out his traditional responsibilities remotely, noting that nearby communities are also affected by the rising insecurity.
