Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the recent wave of killings in Kwara State, describing the incident as tragic and another grim reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security situation.
In a statement reacting to the bloodshed, Obi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, noting that the continued attacks on innocent citizens underscore the urgent need for a more decisive and coordinated security response across the country.
He stressed that the failure to protect lives and property remains one of the biggest challenges facing the nation, adding that Nigerians should not be left at the mercy of criminals and violent groups.
The former Anambra State governor called on security agencies to act swiftly to apprehend those responsible for the Kwara killings and ensure they are brought to justice without delay. He also urged the Federal Government to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve community-based security efforts and address the root causes of insecurity.
According to Obi, justice for the victims is not only necessary for healing and closure but also critical to restoring public confidence in the ability of the state to safeguard its people.
He commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and with the government and people of Kwara State, praying for the repose of the souls of the victims and for peace to return to the affected communities.
Obi reiterated that Nigeria must urgently prioritise the safety of its citizens, warning that continued silence or slow response to such tragedies only emboldens perpetrators and deepens the national crisis.
