Fresh details have emerged about the deadly attack on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, where terrorists reportedly killed at least 75 people, according to relatives of the victims.
The assailants were said to have stormed the agrarian communities in the early hours of Tuesday, February 3, moving from house to house and opening fire on residents. Survivors and family members said the attackers struck while most villagers were asleep, leaving many unable to escape.
According to accounts from the communities, the terrorists arrived in large numbers, wielding sophisticated weapons, and targeted homes indiscriminately. Several victims were reportedly killed on the spot, while others died from injuries sustained during the attack. Houses and other properties were also said to have been destroyed.
Some residents disclosed that prior to the attack, the communities had alerted security agencies about threats from armed groups operating in the area, but help did not arrive in time to prevent the killings. Many villagers fled into nearby bushes during the assault and only returned hours later to find scores of bodies.
Confirming the incident, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described the killings as “barbaric and unacceptable.” He condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the victims, assuring them that the state government would work with federal authorities and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The governor said security has been reinforced in the affected areas to prevent further attacks, adding that investigations were ongoing to determine how the terrorists accessed the communities and the full extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, families of the victims have called on the government to do more to protect rural communities, warning that continued attacks could force residents to abandon their ancestral homes.
The attack has once again raised concerns over insecurity in parts of Kwara State and the vulnerability of remote communities to terrorist violence, despite repeated assurances by authorities that the situation is under control.
