The Yobe State Government has confirmed the existence of a sexual abuse and exploitation syndicate operating within the Potiskum Medium Security Custodial Centre, following reports that some inmates were sexually abused and impregnated while in custody.
State officials disclosed that investigations revealed a coordinated network involving inmates and possibly compromised personnel, who facilitated repeated acts of sexual exploitation inside the correctional facility. The scandal came to light after medical checks confirmed cases of pregnancy among inmates, raising serious concerns about safety, supervision, and accountability within the prison.
The state government described the development as disturbing and unacceptable, stressing that correctional centres are meant for rehabilitation, not abuse or criminal activity. Authorities said a full-scale investigation has been launched to identify all those involved, including any officials found to have aided or ignored the acts.
According to the government, immediate steps have been taken to separate victims from perpetrators, improve monitoring within the facility, and strengthen security protocols to prevent a recurrence. Medical and psychological support are also being provided to affected inmates.

The Yobe State Government assured the public that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law, while reforms will be implemented to restore discipline and protect the rights and dignity of inmates across correctional facilities in the state.
