The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims that Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has become the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state following his recent defection to the ruling party.
Speaking on Monday, Wike described the reports as false and misleading, stressing that Governor Fubara’s decision to join the APC does not automatically make him the party’s leader in Rivers State. According to the former Rivers governor, leadership within the APC is guided by well-established party structures, internal arrangements, and the collective decision of stakeholders, not by sudden political movements.
Wike maintained that the APC in Rivers State already has recognized leaders who have worked tirelessly to build and sustain the party over the years. He noted that such leadership positions cannot be assumed or imposed, warning against narratives capable of creating confusion and division within the party.
The FCT minister further reaffirmed his strong political influence in Rivers State, emphasizing that party leadership must be earned through loyalty, consistency, and long-term commitment to the party’s ideals. He added that while defections are part of politics, they do not override existing party hierarchies or diminish the roles of foundational members.
Wike urged party members and the general public to disregard speculations and focus on strengthening the APC in Rivers State ahead of future political engagements.
