In some cases, industrial dyes—meant for textiles or plastics, not human consumption—are added to make low-quality or recycled oil appear fresh and appealing to buyers.
Health experts warn that these practices can have devastating consequences. Consuming adulterated palm oil has been linked to stomach disorders, liver and kidney damage, food poisoning and long-term exposure risks that may include cancer. Children, pregnant women and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of these chemicals.
Despite existing food safety regulations, weak enforcement and limited market surveillance have allowed the dangerous practice to thrive.
Many consumers, driven by rising food prices and unaware of the risks, continue to purchase cheaper palm oil without knowing it may be contaminated.
Consumer rights advocates are calling on regulatory agencies to intensify inspections, clamp down on offenders and impose stiffer penalties to deter the trade. They also urge the public to buy palm oil from trusted sources and to be cautious of unusually bright or suspiciously cheap products.
As economic pressures mount, experts stress that profit must never come at the cost of human lives. Without urgent action, the adulteration of palm oil threatens to turn a vital food source into a nationwide public health crisis.
