Nigeria’s security agencies have issued a high alert over credible intelligence suggesting plans by terrorist groups to carry out attacks during the Christmas and New Year celebrations across parts of the country.
According to security sources, the threats are believed to be aimed at crowded locations such as churches, markets, recreational centres and major transport hubs, where large gatherings are expected during the festive period. The warning has prompted an urgent review of security arrangements nationwide.
The Nigerian Police Force, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, has intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence operations to disrupt any planned attacks. Additional personnel have been deployed to identified flashpoints, while stop-and-search operations have been increased along major roads and city centres.
Security agencies have also placed churches and other places of worship under tighter protection, especially during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day services. Rapid response units and bomb disposal teams have been put on standby to respond swiftly to any emergency.
Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements, abandoned items or unusual behaviour to the nearest security formation. Members of the public have been advised to avoid overcrowded areas where possible and cooperate fully with security checks.
Despite the alert, security officials assured Nigerians that measures are in place to ensure a peaceful festive season. They emphasized that the warning is a preventive step and not meant to cause panic, calling on citizens to go about their celebrations calmly while staying alert.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that security agencies are working round the clock to neutralize threats and maintain law and order throughout the holiday period.
