17 Killed, Several Missing as Militias Ambush Returning IDPs in Taraba

News

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead, and several others are missing after armed militias ambushed a group of internally displaced persons (IDPs) returning to their community in Taraba State.

The victims were reportedly heading back to their homes in Mararaba Baissa, Donga Local Government Area, when the attackers struck on Wednesday. Local sources said the IDPs had been displaced for months due to recurring communal clashes in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the militia opened fire on the travellers without warning, leaving many dead on the spot while others fled into the bush. Several people are still unaccounted for and feared to have been abducted or killed.

Community leaders described the attack as “barbaric and heartbreaking,” calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to locate the missing persons and prevent further violence.

Authorities in Taraba State have yet to issue a detailed statement, but security operatives have reportedly been deployed to the area to restore calm and begin investigations.

The latest attack adds to growing concerns over the escalating insecurity in parts of the state, where rival groups and armed militias have repeatedly clashed, leaving residents in fear and displacement.
