Public outrage has continued to mount following the brutal killings of an Abuja-based lawyer and a nurse, allegedly by criminals operating the notorious “one chance” robbery scheme in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Abuja branch, have strongly condemned the incidents, describing them as heartbreaking and unacceptable. Both bodies expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in Abuja and called on authorities to take urgent and decisive action to protect residents.
According to reports, the victims were attacked on separate occasions after boarding commercial vehicles believed to be operated by “one chance” criminals—gangs that pose as public transport operators before robbing, assaulting, or killing unsuspecting passengers. The attacks reportedly occurred within the city, highlighting the growing boldness of criminal elements even in supposedly secure areas.
In a statement, the NBA described the killing of the lawyer as a direct assault on the legal profession and the rule of law, noting that no society can thrive where citizens live in constant fear. The association demanded a thorough investigation, swift arrest of the perpetrators, and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law.
Similarly, FIDA Abuja expressed shock and anger over the death of the nurse, emphasizing that healthcare workers already face enormous challenges and risks in the course of their duties. The organization called the killing a tragic loss not only to the victim’s family but to society at large.
Both groups urged security agencies to intensify patrols, improve intelligence gathering, and dismantle “one chance” syndicates that have continued to terrorize commuters. They also appealed to the FCT Administration to strengthen transport regulation, deploy surveillance infrastructure, and ensure visible policing across major roads and residential areas.
Residents of Abuja have also taken to social media to express fear and frustration, with many calling for immediate government intervention to curb the menace. Some commuters say they now avoid certain routes or public transport entirely due to safety concerns.
The NBA and FIDA extended their condolences to the families of the victims and reiterated their commitment to pushing for justice and safer communities. They warned that failure to act decisively could further embolden criminals and deepen public distrust in the ability of authorities to guarantee security.
