A new investigation has uncovered how armed bandits crossed from the Niger Republic into Nigeria and settled in forests across Kwara and Niger states — and how security agencies eventually trapped them.
According to security sources, the bandits infiltrated the country through porous border routes linking the Niger Republic to Nigeria. They reportedly moved in small groups to avoid attention, settling first inside remote parts of Kaima and Baruten LGAs in Kwara before spreading toward Niger State.
Once inside the forests, the gangs began attacking travellers, kidnapping villagers, and raiding farms, prompting joint operations by police and other security agencies.
Acting on intelligence, the police launched a coordinated operation that sealed off the major escape corridors the bandits relied on to return toward the border. The blockade forced many of the criminals deeper into the forest, where officers engaged them in several encounters.
Multiple arrests were made, while weapons and motorcycles used for their movement were recovered. Security officials say the operation is still ongoing, but the major routes used by the gangs have now been secured.
Authorities believe tighter surveillance around the border and rural communities will prevent another infiltration.
