Nigerian cleric, Pastor Sarah Omakwu, has sparked conversations on workers’ welfare after speaking out against the low salaries many employers still pay despite the rising cost of living across the country.
Speaking on the impact of inflation and the increasing financial pressure on workers, Omakwu said many organizations, including schools, have been forced to raise fees in order to improve staff welfare and keep operations running.
According to her, employers must recognize that salaries paid years ago can no longer meet the realities of today’s economy.
She criticized the practice of paying workers extremely low wages, noting that some employees still earn as little as ₦50,000 monthly despite the current economic situation.
“Every employer should increase their staff’s salaries,” she said, stressing that workers cannot be expected to survive on the same income while transportation, food, and other living expenses continue to rise.
Beyond advocating for better pay, Omakwu also revealed how she channels a significant portion of her resources into community development projects, particularly in education.
The cleric disclosed that she sends a large part of her money to her village, Kuda, where she funds the renovation of schools, repairs damaged classrooms, and fixes deteriorating roofs to create a better learning environment for children.
She further revealed that about three years ago, she and her team invested roughly ₦10 million in educational support by purchasing textbooks, school uniforms, shoes, and bags for students in the community.
According to her, the impact of those efforts has been remarkable. She recalled that in the past, many children could be seen returning from farms during school hours. Today, however, she says the situation has changed dramatically.
Omakwu stated that children in Kuda are now focused on their education, spending their time in classrooms rather than on the streets. She added that many of them now confidently communicate in English, a development she believes reflects the positive effect of investing in education.
The pastor emphasized that wealth should be used to uplift communities and improve lives rather than for personal display or status.
She concluded by saying she has no desire to be recognized among the wealthiest pastors in Nigeria, insisting that her priority is making a meaningful difference in the lives of others through education and community development.
