Nigerian political commentator Isaac Fayose has strongly criticised Datti Baba-Ahmed, describing the former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s running mate as a “failure” and accusing him of being jealous of Obi’s recent political decisions.
Fayose questioned Baba-Ahmed’s political influence, noting that he became widely known nationally after Obi selected him as his running mate ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
He also claimed that Baba-Ahmed failed to secure victory in his home state during the election, using this as part of his argument that the former vice-presidential candidate lacks the political strength he portrays.
According to Fayose, Baba-Ahmed’s criticism of Obi is rooted in disappointment that Obi did not select him again as his running mate.
Fayose further alleged that Baba-Ahmed told him he was present at the International Criminal Court (ICC) when discussions surrounding Obi’s possible move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were ongoing. He claimed Baba-Ahmed advised Obi against joining the party because he feared Obi might not select him as his vice-presidential candidate again.
Fayose said he was comfortable with a potential Peter Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket, describing Kwankwaso as more popular and politically stronger in Northern Nigeria.
He concluded by accusing Baba-Ahmed of working against Obi while predicting that he could eventually move to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The comments have added to the growing political debate surrounding Peter Obi, his former running mate, and possible alliances ahead of Nigeria’s next general election.
