The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, has responded to criticism directed at the agency over the circulation of fake and unsafe food products in Nigeria.
Adeyeye said some Nigerians blame NAFDAC for products that fall outside the agency’s primary regulatory responsibilities because they do not fully understand its mandate.
According to her, NAFDAC is responsible for regulating processed and semi-processed food products, while the Ministry of Agriculture has primary responsibility for fresh agricultural produce.
The NAFDAC boss therefore urged Nigerians to better understand the roles of government agencies before holding them responsible for issues outside their jurisdiction.
Her comments come amid concerns over the circulation and consumption of substandard and potentially unsafe food products across the country.
