Akpabio Says Tinubu’s Reforms Are Working, Claims Insecurity Is Easing

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has said the reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration are beginning to yield results, particularly in the areas of the economy and national security.

Akpabio made the remarks on Friday, October 2, 2026, after leading a delegation of National Assembly members to President Tinubu’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the visit, Akpabio expressed confidence in the direction of the administration, saying the National Assembly believes the President is making progress with his reform agenda.

“We believe he’s doing well. These reforms are working and, as far as we are concerned, insecurity is abating and people are able to sleep well,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President, however, acknowledged that security challenges still exist in some parts of the country. He described the situation as improving while noting that there were still “pockets of discontent” and other challenges.

Akpabio also reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to supporting the Tinubu administration through legislation aimed at strengthening the economy, improving security and accelerating national development.

He highlighted the ongoing tax reform programme, which is based on four major pieces of legislation, as one area where the Executive and Legislature are working together to modernise Nigeria’s tax system.

The Senate President further said lawmakers would continue to facilitate the passage of legislation and consideration of presidential nominations required to implement government policies.

He also used the Independence anniversary to call for greater national unity, urging Nigerians to look beyond ethnic, religious and political differences and embrace patriotism, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

Akpabio’s comments come as President Tinubu continues to defend his administration’s economic reforms, while acknowledging that challenges remain. In his October 1 Independence Day address, Tinubu said the government had laid the foundation for economic recovery and that the focus was now shifting toward shared prosperity.
