A 22-year-old South African man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after admitting to raping his biological mother while she was asleep at their home in Carnarvon, Northern Cape.

The sentence was handed down by the Carnarvon Regional Court after DNA evidence linked the accused to the crime. He later pleaded guilty to the charge.

According to reports, the incident occurred on November 23, 2025. The victim, a 42-year-old woman, and her life partner had been drinking alcohol before returning home and falling asleep.

The accused, who had also been consuming alcohol at a friend’s house, reportedly returned home later that night and found the couple asleep.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the man removed his mother’s clothing and sexually assaulted her without her consent.

The woman woke up during the attack and was shocked to discover her son on top of her. After confronting him, he immediately fled the house.

She later informed her partner about the incident, and the matter was subsequently reported to the police.

Following his arrest, the accused initially denied the allegations in a written statement. However, DNA results later confirmed his involvement in the crime.

“Faced with the compelling evidence presented by the State, including the complainant’s testimony and the DNA results, the accused ultimately pleaded guilty to the charge of rape,” Senokoatsane stated.

During sentencing, the victim’s impact statement was presented before the court. In her statement, the mother said she felt deeply hurt and betrayed by her son, whom she had raised as a single parent.

She also revealed that she continues to undergo counselling and suffers from ongoing emotional trauma, including difficulty sleeping since the incident.

While the court acknowledged the accused’s guilty plea as a mitigating factor, it ruled that the gravity of the offence justified a substantial prison sentence.

The court sentenced him to 20 years of direct imprisonment and ordered that his details be entered into South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders.
