The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has cautioned politicians and their supporters against involving Jesus Christ in partisan political debates as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin.
Archbishop Okoh made the remarks following a statement attributed to Peter Obi’s associate, Precious Oruche, popularly known as Mama Pee, who reportedly referenced Jesus Christ while defending and promoting the Labour Party figure ahead of the next election cycle.
Reacting to the development, the CAN President stressed that no politician should be elevated to a divine status or presented as a messianic figure. He emphasized that political leaders are human beings with strengths and weaknesses, while Jesus Christ remains central to the Christian faith and should not be used as a tool for political campaigns or partisan arguments.
According to Okoh, mixing religious sentiments with political loyalty can create unnecessary divisions among believers and distract from the core message of Christianity. He urged Nigerians to evaluate political candidates based on their competence, integrity, policies, and track records rather than treating any individual as a savior.
The cleric further advised supporters of all political parties to conduct their campaigns responsibly, avoid inflammatory rhetoric, and respect the religious beliefs of others. He noted that the Church should remain a place of unity and spiritual guidance rather than a battleground for political rivalries.
His comments come as political conversations surrounding the 2027 presidential election continue to gain momentum, with supporters of various political figures increasingly engaging in heated debates across social media and public platforms.
Archbishop Okoh reiterated that while Christians have the right to participate in politics and support candidates of their choice, faith should not be manipulated to advance partisan interests. He concluded by reminding Nigerians that leadership is determined through democratic processes and that “no politician is the Messiah.”
