A married father of two has been arrested in Kenya for allegedly impersonating a Catholic priest and conducting Masses and administering sacraments at several churches in Turkana County.
The suspect, identified as Jones Bogonko Onchonga, is accused of using forged Church documents to present himself as a Catholic priest attached to the Diocese of Lodwar.
According to reports, Onchonga allegedly celebrated Mass and performed priestly duties at St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalokol, St. Thomas Chapel and St. Mary’s Lodaraja.
The case has reportedly shocked members of the Catholic community, especially after Onchonga was allegedly seen celebrating Mass alongside Bishop John Mbinda, the Catholic Bishop of Lodwar, before his true identity was uncovered.
Following the revelation, the Diocese of Lodwar, through Bishop Rt. Rev. John Mbinda, C.S.Sp., officially disowned Onchonga and stated that he was not an authorized Catholic priest.
The Diocese warned members of the public against allowing him to perform priestly duties or administer sacraments on its behalf.
The incident has raised questions among the faithful about how Onchonga, who is reportedly married with two children, managed to move between different parishes and conduct religious activities without being detected.
Police are now investigating the alleged forgery of Church documents and how the suspect gained access to various churches within the diocese.
