A High Court sitting in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced John Sunday Eyo to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of r@ping a 16-year-old girl.
The judgment was delivered on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, by Justice Blessing Egwu, who convicted the defendant and handed down the life sentence.
Following the ruling, the Basic Rights Council Initiatives (BRCI), the organization that supported the case, praised the Cross River State Police Command for its thorough investigation and prosecution efforts. The group also commended the Cross River State Attorney General, Etubom Ededem Ani, and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr. Okoi Ukam, for their commitment to ensuring justice was served.
BRCI also recognized Mrs. Linda Asuquo for her dedication and support throughout the prosecution, describing her contribution as vital to securing the conviction.
The organization further applauded its staff and civil society partners for their continued advocacy in protecting the rights and welfare of children across the state.
Reaffirming its commitment to the fight against child abuse, BRCI stated that Cross River State maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of violence against children. It also urged government agencies, civil society organizations, communities, and residents to continue working together to prevent abuse, support survivors, and ensure offenders are held accountable.
